Dining room with gray walls | Flowers Painting

It’s time to paint the interior of your home. Yay! Is it as simple as picking up a paintbrush? No, of course not. So many, many things go into an interior painting project. To help you out, we’ve created a simple guide you’ll need to get started and some things you should know before you jump into the world of paint.

Whether it’s a simple accent wall or full room refresh, consider these tips for choosing the perfect interior paint for your home.

Tips for Choosing Interior Paint Colors

Some people know exactly the shade they want on their walls, but most people, require a little research and testing before they decide. There is a lot that goes into a paint color to consider. There are resources and even whole theories related to color.

The Size of the Room

When choosing interior paint, the first thing you want to consider is the size of the room you plan to paint, and what you want to achieve. A smaller, condensed room will feel bigger with lighter shades, while a larger room will seem warm and cozy with darker shades.

The Purpose of the Room

Will it be your bedroom for sleeping, your living room for entertaining, your dining room for eating, or your office for working? The color of the room should magnify the purpose and function of the space. For example, if you want a living room to entertain guests you will want a warm shade that will make your guests feel welcomed and comfortable.

Match Your Personality

You will never go wrong with selecting some of your favorite colors. If you aren’t sure what your favorite hues are, think about what colors catch your eye when shopping, or even take a clue from your wardrobe. The colors you are drawn to with your clothing, the ones you feel good wearing, will also give you the same feeling while painted on your walls.

Paint Finishes

Once you select your paint color, there are few different finishes you can select for your paint. Selecting the right finish can make a huge difference in a room.

Flat Finish

Flat finish is commonly used for ceilings and is ideal for areas where there will be little to no traffic as it can be more difficult to clean.

Low luster, Satin, Eggshell

These finishes are great for areas that will be high traffic, like playrooms and hallways. Unlike a flat finish, these three are easy to maintain and keep clean.

Semi-Gloss or Gloss

Semi-gloss is perfect for rooms like the kitchen and bathroom, and gloss is great for railings and windowsills. It’s important to note that the higher the gloss the more magnified flaws will be on the surface.

After choosing your paint and finish, selecting the right primer is one of the most important parts. The purpose of the primer is to prepare the wall with a base coat that your paint will adhere to. The right primer will be based on the surface of your walls as well as the paint finish you selected. Cutting corners with paint quality will result in needing a new coat of paint sooner than later. High quality paint will last longer, won’t yellow with age, and provides a smoother finish.
