Painting Your Home Will Make You Happy – 2021 Painting Survey

Sherwin-Williams released results from a survey of over 1200 homeowners and the biggest takeaway was this: painting your home will make you happy.

According to the survey, a large majority of homeowners (72%) responded that they think there is a positive emotional impact that results from painting a space. We obviously wholeheartedly agree and see this over and over again from our satisfied customers after we finish painting for them.

Big Painting Plans This Year

Another big takeaway from the survey: everyone has big painting plans this year. After spending more than the usual amount of time at home in the past couple of years, homeowners are ready for a change and a refresh.

  • More than half of all homeowners (56%) plan to paint an area in their home in the next 12 months.
  • A large majority of millennial homeowners (74%) plan to paint an area of their homes in the next 12 months

Most Popular Rooms to Paint

What is the frontrunner for rooms to paint? The bedroom comes out slightly ahead in the polls before the living room.

  • Of those homeowners planning to paint in the next 12 months, half plan to paint their bedroom (49% bedroom, 47% living room, 42% bathroom, 33% kitchen).

Pinterest Influence

When looking for color inspiration, the large majority of homeowners turn to Pinterest (62%), according to the Sherwin-Williams survey. Browsing Pinterest’s image sharing platform is a great starting point and way to get ideas for your own home. There are also color visualizer apps that let you try on any color in your own space. Test Run Paint Colors

While we can’t imagine not testing out a paint color before painting a room, there are those who just go for it. We’re solidly on Team Test though and highly recommend purchasing paint samples or swatches and painting them on your wall before committing. You don’t want to live with a color you don’t like, nor do you want to have to pay to have the room repainted.

  • Nearly one in three homeowners do not test colors before painting (28%).
  • More than 50% of millennial homeowners purchase a paint sample to toss on their walls.
