How to Create an Accent Wall with Paint

Creating an accent wall, also called a feature wall, is one of the easiest, quickest, and most affordable ways to make a design statement in your home. There are endless possibilities—think stripes, color blocks, ombre, two-tone, zigzags, etc. — and it’s currently a very popular home trend.
Pros of Painting an Accent Wall
Painting a single accent wall in a room allows you to make bold choices, whether with pattern or color, without overpowering the whole room. It adds visual interest to the entire space and what’s more, when you are ready for a change a few years down the road, it’s easy to update with another coat of paint.
Choosing an Accent Wall Location
Place your accent wall carefully. Whichever one you designate as the feature wall, that’s different from the other walls, will be the focal point of the space. Your eye will immediately go to the wall that is different. Behind a bed in a bedroom, behind the sink in the bathroom, or a wall of bookshelves are popular placements. Generally, you want to choose a large, uninterrupted wall that is not broken up by doors, windows, or cabinets.
Solid Color
Use a solid contrasting color or shade in the same color family on your accent wall. For shades, consult a paint swatch and use ones that are one or two shades lighter or darker than the main color. To create contrast, understanding the color wheel is helpful.
Colorblocking
This type of accent wall design is simple, yet bold. Colorblocking is painting blocks of color in geometric shapes. It could be as simple as painting the bottom half of the wall one color and a different one on the top. Or just a band of color around the top of the wall near the ceiling.
Ombre
The ombre trend has appeared in everything from clothing to hair color, and now accent walls. Ombre is a French word that means, “to shade.” In English, we use the word to describe the effect created by the transition from one color to another by moving through shade variations of those colors. It creates a beautiful effect when used on a statement wall.
Texture
Walls with architectural interest like board and baton or shiplap make excellent feature walls. The depth and variety created by the wood really pops when painted. It’s not terribly expense to achieve, either.
Stripes
Adding stripes to an accent wall can really alter the mood of a room depending on the color combination you choose. Achieve a sophisticated feel blush and cream colors or a fun, vibrant atmosphere with primary colors.
